The 50-year-old, winner of the green jacket in 1992, carded an opening round of six-under-par 66 to steal the show from world number one Woods on his eagerly-awaited return to the sport.

“To win Augusta at age 50 would be a pipe-dream,” Couples said.

“Can I still win? Of course. It would be a nice dream, that’s for sure, but I’ve got a lot of golf left to even think about being in contention.”

The Presidents Cup captain carded his best-ever round in 25 appearances at Augusta to lead by one from Lee Westwood, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, YE Yang and KJ Choi – and two shots from Woods.

However, Couples said he would not be getting carried away by his stunning start to the first Major of 2010 (5/4 Couples - Couples/Garcia/Katayama – 2nd Round 3 Balls).

He added: “I’m leading the tournament at the moment but there’s a bunch of five-unders up there.

“It’s a lot of pressure to be leading and we’ll see what happens.”
