Paul Casey admits he has put in extra preparation for this week’s Open Championship as he attempts to win his first major at St Andrews. (Casey 40/1 to win Open)
The 32-year-old is still trying to find his top form after time out of the game with a nasty torn rib muscle, but he has shown glimpses of the talent that propelled him to third in the world rankings just 12 months ago in recent times.
The Englishman has yet to win one of golf’s big four tournaments with a joint-sixth finish at the 2004 Masters his best result to date.
The Cheltenham-born star finished in a tie for seventh at the 2008 Open and he is desperate to better that result on a course that he considers as one of the finest in the world.
“For me it’s the major I most want at the ultimate venue,” he said. “I very much want to emulate what the others have done. I am knuckling down and I’ve increased my focus and my workload just to make sure I’m not getting left behind.”
Casey has missed the last two European events to concentrate on practicing for the Open but is currently out of the Ryder Cup rankings both on the European and world lists.
A good showing in Scotland this week would go a long way to helping him achieve automatic selection and mean he would not have to rely on being one of captain Colin Montgomerie’s three picks for the biannual event, which takes place at Celtic Manor in Wales between October 1 and 3. (Europe 4/6 to win Ryder Cup)
